Sometimes especially beginners find it difficult to understand how exactly a compressor works. But when you split it into seperate parts it is not so hard at all. The most important part is to train your ear on HOW a compressor alters the sound of an audiofile. The effects might be too subtile when you are not familiar with them. Even more when you use an compressor which does not add any colour to the audio itself like FET compressors do. Be patient, it takes time to train your ear. And there is no shortcut like in any other profession. If you want to be good you have take your time and take it step by step.
